French TGV world speed record of 3rd April 2007 - 574.8 kilometres per hour / 357 miles per hour.
(Previous official speed record for a train running on rails was 515.3 kmph, set in France in 1990; other unofficial records & maglev world record at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_spe... )
The special train, called V150 (velocity 150 meters/second), is an enhanced version of trains that will run on the Paris-Strasbourg line from June 2007.
The V150 was made up of two normal cars that will run on the eastern TGV track and three double-decker carriages and can develop over 25,000 horsepower, twice that of a conventional TGV.
Record was set between Preny, near Metz in the east of France, and Bezannes near Reims.
